"The Soul Swallower"
Purgatory, is said to be a spiritual plane to house the souls of dead creatures and evil spirits. Deep within its confines is a place where even the most evil and forsaken of souls are found to dwell. Here is where you will find what the creatures of Purgatory fear most. “The Soul Swallower”
The Soul Swallower is a terrifying entity. His name gives meaning to his actions alone. The Soul Swallower is believed to hunt and locate souls of the damned using a lantern that is said to contain an “All Seeing" Eye. This Eye can see the essence of a spirit , and scope out the souls that wander in Purgatory. This creature is three beast in one. An upper half, holding the lantern that houses “The All Seeing Eye” in which to locate a soul to prey upon. And a lower half, which is the half that devours and consumes the captured souls. This upper half will locate a soul with the Eye inside the lantern, which can see through even the thickest of darkness. No soul can hide from its gaze. Once the eye has found a soul, the lower half will forever hold its scent. It uses its long blade like arms to stab into the ground, pulling and slithering through the darkness hunting and lurking. When The Soul Swallower nears close to its victim, it’s upper half will emit a sort of clicking sound. This is how a victim knows the time has come for its reaping.
Deep in purgatory resides a prison. In the old days this prison contained the most evil and grotesque of souls and spirits that roamed Purgatory. It was said that before given the name "Soul Swallower” this monster used to be called “Warden” because he used to walk the halls of the prison, tending to the needs of the souls locked up in cages. One day the prison received a new occupant. It was an Eye, that seemed to know anything and everything on a soul within all of Purgatory. It could sense the location, the intention and even the scent of any creature that dwelled within this wretched realm. When the Eye first saw the Warden, it rejoiced. It looked at the Warden and saw the future they both had together. So the Eye Called out to the Warden and asked him,
“Do you enjoy being a slave for the wicked?”
The Warden replied “ I do not.”
"Or would you rather be the Harbinger? Would you rather be feared BUT respected by all in Purgatory?” Taunted the Eye.
Anxious by what the Eye said, the Warden did not truly trust the Eye's ominous gratuity to help. The Warden lived for the life of the prison, he knew the tricks that evil played. He understood that deception lied within every word spoken, from a soul locked within these walls. Although, something felt different this time. The Warden felt a different presence that weighted down the Eye’s words. So curious to find out what the Eye meant about him being respected and feared, the Warden retreated back to his living quarters where he retrieved a small lantern like object attached to a chain. Upon arrival at the Eye's cell, the Warden looked at the Eye and explained to him what he was holding. What he was holding was a mobile prison cell in what looked like a Lantern. Originally meant to contain an ever lasting flame, to never die. The metal was infused with an indestructible material found only in Purgatory. Once locked, this mobile prison cell can never be opened again. So the Warden explained to the Eye how the only way he would consider his acquisition, is if he would compromise to his own. The Eye paused for a moment, knowing that no matter what choice he made he will still never be “free” however, bending the meaning of “free", if he accepted to what the Warden exclaimed then he would be MORE free than if he declined. So the Eye agreed to become locked into the carrying vessel.
Immediately following the transfusion on the Eye into the lantern, the Warden felt an evil sensation run through his body. He became hungry, hungry for souls of the wicked and the damned. The Warden then walked up to a prison cell that contained an Ogre like looking soul, who was condemned to the prison due to the eradication of a small village back when this creature yet lived in the real world outside or Purgatory. Holding the lantern up to the Ogre, immobilizing him. The Warden’s body changed physical form, growing blade like arms, and another mouth that pleaded the craving of an ever lasting hunger for souls. He then cut the cell apart with a swing of his arm, slowly entered the cell, and began to indulge and devour the prisoner.
The Eye laugh as he watched his plan unfold, and said “How does it feel, to be The Soul Swallower..”
You see, when The Soul Swallower devours a soul, the Swallower him self eats the soul, attempting to fill his craving of hunger. However, the All Seeing Eye consumes the essence of Knowledge and life that Soul contained. Therefore the Eye, needs The Soul Swallower.
